Do you want to make something unique for the holidays? We have a number of holiday print blocks and will be open printing throughout the holiday season. You can make a hand printed letterpress card this season. We’ll even show you how to design and set your own. So get creative this holiday season, and have fun giving and getting your fingers inky. We will be doing this on Saturdays throughout the holiday season.
Prairie Printing is excited to announce that, working with Art 321, we will be teaching a 3 week course on letterpress printing. This class will be taught on three successive Saturdays, beginning on 27th and ending October 11th. This course is designed to teach the basics of letterpress printing. In the first session, we’ll cover both press operation and maintenance as well as the principles of good type and page design and how to hand set type. In the next session, we’ll focus on images - how to make blocks using traditional and modern techniques as well as what to consider when designing an image for letterpress printing. In this class, we’ll also cover the process of making multi color prints . Then, in the last class, we’ll put everything together, with the goal of making a print that combines both text and print in more than one color. Throughout, you’ll have the opportunity to work on multiple presses, including an 1895 Reliance hand iron press and a rare pre-1910 Kelsey Star. The goal is that, after the class, you’ll know enough that feel confident operating a press, setting type, making & printing blocks, and combining these into a single print. From there, the only limit is your creativity.
Fair warning - The smell of letterpress ink is addicting, hand setting type is oddly calming, and printing is a skill you can learn in an afternoon but spend a lifetime mastering.
To sign up for this series of classes, please contact Art 321, the coordinating agency for these courses. You can reach them by email at email@example.com or by phone at (307) 265-2655. You can also contact Art 321 through their website http://casperartguild.org/index.html. Or, you can contact me through this site’s contact form, and I will be happy to answer questions or forward along your information to Art 321.
Thank you for your interest and I look forward to getting our fingers inky!
Prairie Printing will be at Nic Fest this year. We will be talking about our work, selling some of our letterpress printed cards and broadsides. More excitingly, we will have one (maybe two depending on the space) of our presses there. For Nic Fest, we are designing a custom broadside for this event that visitors will be able to print for themselves. So come by, learn about printing of the past, and maybe get some ink on your fingers and do some printing of your own.
A few years ago, I was given a box of print blocks. Turns out they were advertising print blocks for classic 1950’s and 60’s serial western movies, the kind that would play every Saturday and that kids could go to for a quarter . To catalog these blocks, we will be printing each of them on our 1895 Reliance printing press. They will then be scanned into our database so we have a record of what they are. If anyone is interested in helping, we will be at Art 321 fro 11 AM on printing these unique pieces of Americana.
